Caustic soda, also known as lye or sodium hydroxide, is an inorganic compound that is commercially available in the form of granules, pellets or flakes. It is used in various industrial applications owing to its strong alkaline properties. These applications include manufacture of pulp & paper, petroleum products, alumina, soaps & detergents, textiles, food processing, petroleum processing, water treatment, mining, pharmaceuticals and glass making. Commercially, caustic soda is used as a solid or 50% aqueous solution. It is industrially produced through the electrolytic chloralkali process.
Growth in end-user industries such as pulp & paper, alumina, soaps & detergents and chemicals is estimated to boost demand for caustic soda during the forecast period. Chlor-alkali is an electro-intensive industry, as it uses electricity as a raw material and not as utility. Thus, the energy intensive production process of caustic soda is anticipated to hamper market growth in the near future. However, upcoming opportunities in relatively untapped markets of Africa may open up new growth avenues for the caustic soda market in the near future.
In terms of volume, organics was the largest application segment of the caustic soda market accounting for approximately 20% share in 2013. Caustic soda is extensively used as a base in the manufacture of various organic chemicals such as methanol, hydroxyl ethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, cellulose ether and methyl cellulose and acetic acid. Alumina is projected to be the fastest growing application segment during the forecast period owing to increasing demand for aluminum in automotive, packaging and aerospace applications. Additionally, pulp & paper accounted for a significant volume share in 2013 due to high demand for caustic soda in bleaching processes. The market for pulp & paper has witnessed a surge in the past few years. Other applications including textiles, petroleum processing and food processing have been growing at a fast pace over the past few decades. This trend is likely to continue during the forecast period. This, in turn, is expected to drive demand for caustic soda in the near future.
The global caustic soda market was fragmented in nature in 2013. Key players in the caustic soda market include The Dow Chemical Company, Olin Corporation, AkzoNobel N.V., Reliance Industries Limited, Occidental Petroleum Corporation, Formosa Plastics Corporation, Shin-Etsu Chemicals Co. Ltd., Axiall Corporation, INEOS ChlorVinyls, and Bayer MaterialScience AG.
